Gardeners Blackfen Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Blackfen is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our aims and procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health and to comply with applicable health and safety legislation and good industry practice.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
Our aim is to conduct all gardening, landscaping, and maintenance work in a way that minimises risk to people, property, and the environment. We will take reasonable steps to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures for all tasks carried out by Gardeners Blackfen.
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Blackfen rests with management, who will ensure that this policy is implemented, maintained, and reviewed regularly. Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day health and safety performance on site, including checking that team members follow safe systems of work and use tools and equipment properly. All employees have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others and to co-operate fully with health and safety procedures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting work at any garden or site, Gardeners Blackfen will consider the specific risks present, including terrain, access, weather conditions, existing structures, and nearby members of the public. Where necessary, a written risk assessment will be prepared, and workers will be briefed on the findings and required control measures.
We will adopt safe systems of work for all routine gardening activities, including but not limited to grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, weed control, use of power tools, and waste removal. Procedures will be reviewed regularly to reflect changes in equipment, techniques, or legislation. Work will only be carried out by persons who are competent and appropriately instructed in the relevant tasks.
Training, Competence, and Supervision
Gardeners Blackfen recognises that competent, informed staff are essential for safe working. We will provide adequate training and instruction to ensure that employees understand how to carry out their work safely and know the risks associated with gardening tasks, machinery, and materials.
Training may include induction training, task-specific training on machinery and tools, safe manual handling, use of personal protective equipment, and awareness of environmental hazards. Refresher training will be provided as needed. Less experienced workers will be supervised until they are assessed as competent to work independently.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening tools, machinery, and equipment used by Gardeners Blackfen will be suitable for the task and maintained in safe working order. Equipment will be inspected regularly, and any defects reported and addressed promptly. Machinery will only be used by trained personnel who follow the manufacturer’s instructions and our safe operating procedures.
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and other protective items relevant to the work. Employees are required to use this equipment as instructed and to report any damage or loss so that replacements can be arranged.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling loads such as soil, plants, equipment, and waste. Gardeners Blackfen aims to minimise the risk of injury from manual handling by using mechanical aids where practical, planning lifting tasks carefully, and training staff in safe handling techniques.
Employees are expected to avoid unsafe lifting practices, to ask for assistance with heavy or awkward loads, and to report any concerns about physical strain or injury. We will consider individual capabilities when allocating tasks and endeavour to rotate duties to reduce repetitive strain.
Chemicals, Substances, and Environmental Hazards
Where Gardeners Blackfen uses gardening products such as fertilisers, weed killers, and other substances, we will handle and store them in accordance with safety information provided by manufacturers and relevant health and safety regulations. We will assess the risks associated with these substances and implement appropriate control measures, which may include restricted access, correct labelling, safe storage, and use of protective equipment.
Care will be taken to protect wildlife, water sources, and planting areas from unnecessary exposure to chemicals. Alternatives with lower risk to people and the environment will be considered wherever reasonably practicable.
Working at Height and Site Access
Certain gardening activities, such as hedge cutting, pruning, or work near raised beds and walls, may involve working at height. Gardeners Blackfen will ensure that safe methods are used, including secure ladders or equipment, stable footing, and appropriate supervision. Work at height will be avoided where safer alternatives exist.
We will also manage site access to reduce risks to clients, visitors, and the public. Tools and equipment will be stored securely when not in use, work areas will be kept as tidy as reasonably possible, and any temporary hazards such as trip risks will be identified and controlled.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses involving Gardeners Blackfen staff or arising from our work must be reported promptly to management. This enables us to investigate causes, learn from what happened, and put measures in place to prevent recurrence. Where required, accidents will be recorded and reported in line with legal requirements.
Employees will be briefed on what to do in the event of an emergency, including serious injury, fire, or sudden illness. First aid provisions will be available, and those responsible for first aid will be appropriately trained. Emergency contact information and any specific site procedures will be communicated to staff before work begins.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Blackfen is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We will monitor our activities, review accident and incident data, and consult with employees to identify opportunities to improve our arrangements. Feedback from clients regarding safety matters will be taken seriously and will inform future changes to working practices.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically, and at least annually, or sooner if there are significant changes in our work activities, equipment, staffing, or applicable legislation. Updated versions of the policy will be communicated to all employees so that everyone understands their responsibilities and the standards expected.
By following this policy, Gardeners Blackfen aims to deliver professional gardening services while protecting the wellbeing of our staff, clients, and the wider community.
